Is there a proper way to hang a grouping of images? Is it ok to use different frames on the same wall, even preferable? What about black and white photos alongside color? Certain heights?
Whadda ya think? Are there rules we should discuss?
I think anything goes... i'v seen it all and love all groupings.. Great looks are always different. It's like the shoe that fits..when it is right it is just plain right{for the creator} Mauhhhhhh! Have a fun fun week little g. xx's
I'm a mix 'em all up kinda girl, although I do love a wall with black and white photographs in black frames....therefore, the world is your oyster and anything goes.!!!! XXXX
I just read this huge article in New York magazine on how rules are out because of the recession and anything goes! Or maybe because the recession is used as excuse for everything these days! :P
G.-This wonderful eclectic mix is at Kate Spade's SoHo store. No rules per se, but some guidelines and a good eye. 1. Arrange it on the floor first, when you like it, start hanging from the center out 2. Put your favorite piece at the center position-marked 1 here 3. Put the larger pieces more toward the center and the smaller more on the perimeter 4. Have things step down from your center picture 1-no rows or measuring here
I'm not sure what the rules would be... definitely it takes a good eye to place everything together and see when it is balanced and when it is not... often tis just trial and error to get it right
usually I don't like coordinates... I prefer things put together at random, well it seems random... for frames is the same: better if different, but sometimes it depends from pics or paintings!
Getting a wall grouping right is kinda like porn - you know it when you see it.

i like this... a lot...
ReplyDeleteIf this is your group, I think it looks perfect. I'm no designer, but I say mix it up. Life isn't perfect.
ReplyDeleteI think hanging art is an art form in itself - there are no hard and fast rules, but it can be challenging to get the feel, color, and balance right.

ReplyDeleteI wanted to come up with a better comment than Raina's and three cups of coffee later, I'm still stumped. "You know it when you see it." Amen!
ReplyDeleteThat said, I've wanted to do this for evah, got the wall picked out and everything, but am too fear stricken to put that first nail in the wall. :0)
I think it's more charming to have different frames! ...add characters*
