.style or vile?

Ok, vile would be quite the push for me, but the pitchforks made me ponder:
Are there limits in bringing outdoor utility items inside for interior design?  Raina at If The Lamp Shade Fits is always one to make me think, and I loved her post this week. She asks if humble is the new grandeur in design and shows ripped-up feed bags made into pillows, along with many other interesting items. And as I had this image in my treasury, it seemed a good time to ask...

Style or, and if vile seems a bit dramatic, unnecessary?  Is it charming, or should you leave the pitch forks and barn broom outside?  Or is it good to have them handy to yank down and herd the kids to bed?  I'm on the fence.  Get it? Fence.  Outside. Ok.

Do tell!

  1. Hm...I like them in the 1st photo, but not so much in the 2nd :) My uncle has some antique pitch forks in his store (he's a furniture designer), and I think they look great, but I s'pose it depends on the forks/brushes...

  2. I like the pitchforks. They're very dramatic against the white. Sadly though, the movie shrek came to mind the minute I saw them...

  3. Nikki-Uh oh. You may have ruined the forks for me as well! Hahaha!

  4. haha, sorry. What about that stair rail though? I really like it. It looks like rope and dock tie ons or something.

  5. Hi~

Everytime I have seen the first image...I love it! I love the simplicity of all the lines in the room...from the banister design, to the white wood walls in a horizontal to the stripe verticals on the chair, etc...and then the bold vertical lines from the pitchforks. I do LOVE it!

  6. Ooh--I have to go with vile! I agree with Raina--humble is the new glam--but this is taking it TOO far!

  9. Oh I love the forks on the wall! The rawness on the clean white walls are the best!

  10. Vile. And stupid.

If, when decorating, you're asking yourself "What Would Ellie Mae Do?", you're in dangerous territory.

    Thanks for the shout-out, Sweetie!

  12. I'm thinking vile unless you have farm animals inside your home!

  13. I am not really objective as I grew up (at least during the vacation) in a house decorated like this ... old time forks on the wall ... old times objects everywhere :)

  14. I like the pitchforks, but not the light fixture above them, and not with the rope banister (though i like that, too). I do not like the broom lamp - it's about the cheap-looking design. It looks kitchy. I think old farm tools can be so beautiful, especially iron ones. That's my disjointed ramble!

  15. i love the pitch forks but the barn broom looks like it partied too much has put the lamp shade on it's head.

  16. Liza-I am with you. I have an amazing farm table and love it, but I am not a big kitchy fan.
    Ennui-that is just hilarious...and true!

  18. not lovin either one. the pitchforks look like bad props in a horror movie set and the lamp...i'm surprised the bristles aren't bent over trying to hold it up. now, if you had shown a farm table...style!

  20. I'm one of those who thinks everyone should surround themselves with things they love. I mean, if you want to spend $600 for a ripped up burlap pillow...have at it, right?! But I went over to If The Lampshade Fits and read some of the comments. I'm still laughing at what House of Slappy wrote.

  26. Hmm. The pitchforks are scary--almost vile. The broom is just...how to put it? I wonder where "form follows function" applies? Always fun to read these.
