.style or vile?

Let's play a game, shall we?  Do you think this item has style?  Or is it vile

Would you have guessed the Swarovski crystal puts the price tag higher than the average house in Detroit, Michigan? Yup. Does that matter? Have you ever been guilty of admiring something you previously designated "ick" once you learned it came from a notable designer? Like, you thought your aunt's brooch was fugly until you found out it's Cartier-now try and pry it from your hands? Have you seen a chair in someone's home, felt that it belonged on the curb, and then summoned a new found admiration when it was vintage Eames? Or the reverse. You coveted the pillow on your neighbor's couch until you learned they are Jaclyn Smith for K-mart. Or does that make it even BETTER!? The fact that the style had no correlation to the price.

What makes something scream style?  Or vile?

So.  Do you like this toilet?  And don't give me any crap. I'm just asking...

  3. I am cracking up about this look. There is a store right down the street from me called "B.B. Simon" They just opened a month ago and EVERYTHING in the store is covered with this crystal. Even a piano! It's too much for me. I could never own it. Hilarious G!!

  4. I love your clever writing! I think it is sooo vile! I don't feel too influenced by names on most items but with vintage furniture I think it sways me a bit sometimes.

  5. Puulllleaze! Stuff like this (the toilet, not the post) makes me crazy. Even when I had a well paying job (lo though long ago it was) this kind of greedy flash rubbed me into a snit fit.

Maybe it comes from my formative years with the nuns always saying, "Remember the poor pagan babies."

  6. Very funny Kate. Is it real?? Maybe it used to belong to Liberace?? xv

  7. It's a bit Liberace, isn't it? I'll admit to being guilty of the second look when I hear Cartier or Eames, though. Great post!

  8. So funny! Two people in a row mentioned Liberace! And, yes, it is real!

  9. VILE, in every way possible from conspicuous consumption to being just plain fugly! Ick! And I'm guilty, there, I said it. If you've got an ugly Eames or Cartier doo-dad, please, let me take it off your hands. If it's not heartstoppingly gorgeous, I'll sell it on ebay. Afterall, there's a buyer out there for everything...hence, le toilet!

    Great post, g.

  10. Oh, my goodness. It's vile.

I was about to say I'm not influenced by designer names, but I admit that if I find an item in a thrift store by a designer, and I originally think it's ugly, I'll give it a second look. On the other hand, if something has good design (as in simplicity, form following function, etc), and good quality, and I LIKE it, I don't care if Joe the Handyman made it. Style is style!

I really like your blog, and thanks for visiting mine.

  16. it is FULL ON RIDICULOUS! if it was in somebody's house, i would die and want to smash it up.

but, if it was a work of art and a joke, i would applaud the artist.

  18. honest? a bit vile for sure! although, i am guilty of wanting anything that is out of the box, if it is designer or a no-man artist... but on this...i would have to pass on because even though i know the seat is smooth, it looks like it would hurt to sit on it~ do you like it?

  19. lol. Imagine having to use jewelry cleaner on your toilet.

  20. Vile...Liberace would have loved it, though! Imagine the impracticality of having to keep such a thing germ free. ICK!

  21. Without question, it's vile! However, it is not as impractical as you might first think. The way that thing shines, you wouldn't need a night lite.

  26. i dig it. i don't think it could actually BE in someone's house though. unless it was in karl lagerfield's spaceship.

  27. Yikes. I don't need to go to the bathroom in a disco ball. No, no, no.
